This is the act of being consumed in your activities, whereby you lose awareness of time and your surroundings. This might be through an engaging piece of work or by spending time with your family. Whatever the circumstances, reaching a flow state regularly is a crucial ingredient in the happiness formula.

Control Your Surroundings

You don’t have control over all aspects of your life, but you do choose where and how to spend your time. Try to remember that you’re a product of your environment. So if you’re keeping company with people that bring you down or constantly search for the negatives, you’ll find yourself doing the same. So it’s important to keep company with good people.

You’ll also want to make sure that you’re consuming beneficial information. For example, the news is good for staying connected with what’s happening in the world. But, it can be easy to forget that they’re also incentivised to get eyeballs - so dramatising events and focussing on the negatives is commonplace. So, instead, try to avoid overdosing on the news and seek out positive stories to maintain your worldview.

Conquer Your Negative Thoughts

Negative thoughts are prevalent. Whilst the odd thought might not do harm, over time, they can seep into our psyche. This leads us to think that negative thoughts playing out in our minds are actual reality. These are known as automatic pessimistic thoughts. Getting a handle on these negative thought reflexes is the key to a happier outlook.

The easiest way to do this is by directly challenging them. By doing this, you’re switching to your rational brain instead of allowing these thoughts to wreak havoc. Doing this regularly will train your mind to view these feelings as just that, isolated thoughts that don’t form your reality. That'll help you seek out the positives in the present rather than being brought down by any anxieties over the future.

Do Something Meaningful Each Day

Attempt to do something meaningful to you every day. This can be as simple as smiling at a stranger or gifting a loved one a compliment.
